Forming
on the left of the line, the Light Infantry Company was comprised of nimble,
active men, and served as the scouts and skirmishers of the Regiment.
This elite company would very often screen the front and flanks of the
battalion on the march or as it advanced into battle. You may notice
that the uniforms are a bit different from the other two companies.
The Lights wear black belting and have red waistcoats, or vests, instead
of white. This helped
to camouflage them in the woods. The caps they wear are leather.
The caps have chain sewn in concentric circles to help protect against
cavalry sabre blows. Contrary to history's common vision of a British
soldier of 1775, this company would actually fight "guerrilla"
style behind rocks and trees and through the woods often in pairs of two.
As with the Grenadiers, the flank companies of several regiments were
often "brigaded" to form units of Light Infantry and Grenadiers.
The photo on the right shows the Light Infantry marching
across the old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts led by Serjeant
Wm Hickey.

The music is Gary Owen a fine Irish tune which celebrates
the Irish troops who fought with the 10th Foot Light Infantry Co'y in
the 1770s. |
