Battle Honours

William III
(Portrait by Sir Godfrey Kneller)

The practice of awarding Battle Honours to a regiment for valour in combat dates back to King William III who authorized the motto "Virtutis Namurcensis Præmium (Reward for valour at Namur) be emblazoned on the Regimental Colour of the 18th Regiment of Foot (later the Royal Irish Regiment) for their actions at the Siege of Namur (1695). Prior to that, the 2nd Regiment of Foot (now the The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment), was recognized for its 23-year defense of the Colony of Tangier from 1662 to 1680, an honour the present day regiment still holds. (Source: Chronological Index of British and Imperial Battle Honours)

Battle honours were not awarded to British regiments serving in America during the American War for Independence as this was seen as an internal rebellion. However, battle honours were granted to regiments that had engaged the French and Spanish in other theatres of this conflict.

Over its >300 year history, the 10th Regiment (later the Royal Linconshires and currently 2nd Battalion, Royal Anglians) has distinguished itself in battle on more than one occasion.
